Summary

A Spanish public university specialised in electrical and electronic power systems is developing a project proposal to the call LC-BAT-08-2020 on next-generation batteries for stationary energy storage. The project objective is to develop new aluminium-air batteries. They are looking for companies related to the design and manufacture of battery management systems and companies involved in the manufacture of printed electronics to work together within a research cooperation agreement.

Description

A research group on electrical and electronic power systems in a Spanish public university, with a highly specialised multidisciplinary team and focused in power quality, power electronic systems, renewable energies, energy storage and electrical vehicles, is preparing a project proposal for the H2020 topic LC- BAT-08-2020 - Next-generation batteries for stationary energy storage.

The overall objective of the ALAIRE project is to develop a new concept of aluminium-air battery adequate for present and future electric vehicle (EV) and grid energy storage applications through the development of new electrode materials and electrolyte interphases, analysing different alternatives such as carbon nanomaterials, new aluminium alloys and novel sustainable electrolytes. In addition, ALAIRE also considers the design for easy recycling and reuse and the development of innovative manufacturing processes, such as 3D printing.

Expected results are:
- Good reversibility (cycling) and speed (power) of the redox reactions.
- High specific energy and power.
- Intrinsic safety from the materials employed suitable for operational service in human environments.
- Low cost for wide use of electricity storage systems in the society related to smart grid evolution.

The university has already built an almost complete consortium that includes research centers, SMEs and industrial partners from Spain, Germany, Portugal, Italy and United Kingdom.

In order to complete the consortium, the university is looking for companies with expertise in design and manufacturing of batteries management systems as well as companies with the capacity to manufacture printed electronics interested in the research results on aluminium-air batteries for different applications. Partners from all H2020 eligible countries are welcome except for those from Spain or Portugal.

- Specific area of activity of the partner:
Control electronics. Design and manufacturing of battery management systems. Manufacture of printed electronics and equipment for these processes.

- Task to be performed:
The manufacturer of battery management systems (BMS) would develop the BMS electronics (hardware and software) for the new battery technology functionality and protection (aluminium-air).
The manufacturer of printed electronics would be in charge of producing printed electronics circuits and/or equipment associated to these processes.

- EU / International project experience:
It will be considered an asset.
