PRIMA 2020 - Redesign agro-livelihood systems to ensure resilience: looking for agrofood research centres from Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal and/or Slovenia

Country of Origin: Spain

Publication Date: 26 March 2020

A Spanish business association specialised in agrotech solutions is developing an R&D project proposal to ensure the resilience of productive activities in isolated communities of North Africa and Middle-East. The association is seeking European agrofood research centres to enter into a research cooperation agreement for a PRIMA project proposal on redesign agro-livelihood systems to ensure resilience.

A Spanish business association made up by more than 40 companies is focused in increasing agricultural production in developing countries, carrying out projects based on the generation of distributed renewable energies and promoting actions for improving the biodiversity of global food resources.

They are currently developing a project proposal for the PRIMA 2020 call. The aim of the project is to present an impact solution to ensure the resilience of productive activities in isolated communities. The fundamental objective is to achieve an application for the mountainous areas of North Africa and the Middle East, where there is a very serious problem for the population due to the absence of productive activities. A large part of the problems of jihadism come from the absolute misery of these territories.

The specific objective will be to develop the method that allows the modular, systematic, and viability oriented construction of the value chain for the agro-livelihood system in remote mountain areas, ensuring resilience. It includes, on the one hand, the intensification of the production of mountain plants, trees and shrubs and, on the other hand, post-harvest techniques.

The project foresees a co-design methodology to optimise processes in remote locations. This co-design process involves actions to improve and sustain agricultural intensification, as well as actions to improve and sustain post-harvesting anywhere in the world, without the need for specialised personnel. The process is carried out in such a way that sampling and testing in the previous stages of construction of the experimental plants, and during their operation, are carried out by local personnel (using sensors or drones). In this way the information can be processed using the integrated intelligence modules, dumped into the network and processed in the international analysis station that provides support.

The two groups of actions, in turn, are divided into tasks:
1. Actions for the improvement and sustainability of agricultural intensification:
a) Efficiency tests of production processes aimed at the rational use of water and aspects related to water quality.
b) Trials with resilient varieties, including trials with new plant varieties.
c) Trials on pests for the treatment of pests and fungal or microbial diseases with the use of natural fungicides or with biocontrol systems, seeking new production technologies to obtain healthier foods.
d) Production studies as well as studies on the physical-chemical characteristics or in the presence of certain nutritional or functional compounds.
e) Evaluation of new market niches for the foods produced.

2. Actions for the improvement and sustainability of post-harvest:
a) Quality and yield tests in dehydration to verify that nutrients in the food are not altered, maintaining quality and flavour.
b) Tests on fermentation techniques that allow extending the shelf life of food products, maintaining their characteristics.
c) Characterisation and testing for the production of preserves, integrating pasteurization or sterilization applications.

The Spanish association has already built an almost complete consortium that includes partners from Algeria, Turkey, Tunisia and Jordan. In order to complete the consortium, the association is looking for research centres from Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal and/or Slovenia that could carry out any of the above mentioned tasks.
